Jeep Wrangler [2007 – 2018]: Rhino Rack Weight Limits

Below is a table of Rhino Rack weight limits for Jeep Wrangler (4-door): 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The primary use of this data is for carrying rooftop tents. I’ve included data on road dynamic weight limit, off road dynamic weight limit, static weight limit and rack weight. This information is included in the calculations section.

The information for this table comes from the Specifications page and Instructions page for each specific rack. My calculations come after the table and I provide source links. I provide a lot more details about how the calculations work here: Jeep Wrangler [2018 – 2020]: Rhino Rack Weight Limits.

I have spent a lot of time trying to understand this confusing weight limit data in order to make sense out of it. However, you should validate your rack’s weight limits with the dealer in case I made a mistake. Report any mistakes in the comment section.

You have to be careful about using the following Rhino Rack racks for rooftop tents: Pioneer Platform and any of the 2-bar racks. The Pioneer Platform rack is too heavy making the cargo weight limit for off road driving low (114lbs). The 2-bar racks have a low static cargo weight limit (518lbs.)

Usage: Cargo Weight = Dynamic/Static Weight – Rack Weight

Cargo Weight: How much you can put on your rack.

Weight and Load Factors

  1. Roof Allowance (kg) – Maximum weight on roof
  2. Off road load factor – (roof allowance)/(off road load factor)
  3. Static load multiplier – multiplier x roof allowance
  4. Rack weight (kg)

Calculations

On the main page under “Specifications,” it says the rack holds up to 264lbs. And the “Static Load Rating” is 360kg. 360kg converted to lbs is 793.7lbs. But what do these numbers actually mean?

Go to the “Instructions” page. The BJKB1.pdf instructions provides information for two and three crossbars. Below is an excerpt from BJKB1.pdf:

For three crossbars (includes rack weight):

  • On road dynamic load limit: 120kg or 265lbs
  • Off road dynamic load limit: 120/1.5 = 80kg or 176lbs
  • Static load limit: 3×120 = 360kg or 794lbs
  • Weight of rack (crossbars): 7.5kg or 17lbs

We have to deduct the rack weight to get the available cargo weight. These weights represent the maximum weight you can put on your rack.

  • On road cargo allowance: 120kg – 7.5kg = 112.5kg or 248lbs
  • Off road cargo allowance: 80kg – 7.5kg = 72.5kg or 160lbs
  • Parked cargo allowance: 360kg – 7.5kg = 352.5kg or 777lbs

On the main page, it says the “Load Limit” is 220lbs (100kg) and the “Static Load Limit” is 240kg.

For two crossbars (includes weight of rack):

  • On road dynamic load limit: 100kg or 220lbs
  • Off road dynamic load limit: 100kg/1.5 = 66.7kg or 147lbs
  • Static load limit: 2.4x100kg = 240kg or 529lbs
  • Weight of rack (crossbars): 5kg or 11lbs

The static load factor drops from 3 to 2.4 (for Jeep Wrangler) when the load limit drops from 120kg to 100kg. See the link.

Deduct the rack weight to get the cargo allowances.

  • On road cargo allowance: 100kg – 5kg = 95kg or 209lbs
  • Off road cargo allowance: 66.7kg – 5kg = 61.7kg or 136lbs
  • Static cargo allowance: 240kg – 5kg = 235kg or 518lbs

These numbers represent what you can put on your rack when on/off road and while parked.

Pioneer Platform (72″ x 56″) RLT600 Unassembled

Load limit is 264lbs or 120kg. Static load rating is 360kg. Rack weight (42108BF) is found in instructions for Pioneer-Flat-Pack.pdf (28.5kg):

The numbers below are what you want:

  • On road dynamic load limit: 120kg or 265lbs
  • Off road dynamic load limit: 120/1.5 = 80kg or 176lbs
  • Static load limit: 3x120kg = 360kg or 794lbs
  • Rack weight: 28.5kg or 63lbs

Deduct the rack weight to get the cargo allowances.

  • On road cargo allowance: 120kg – 28.5kg = 91.5kg or 202lbs
  • Off road cargo allowance: 80kg – 28.5kg = 51.5kg or 114lbs
  • Static cargo allowance: 360kg – 28.5kg = 331.5kg or 731lbs
